CAREER
In order to help figure out what I want to do after high school, I took a career test and I was vastly surprised by the various options offered. The strongest career options offered include: screenwriting and film direction. Typically a screenwriter would produce written blueprints used to create films and tv shows. Based on the description of this job, this would mold relatively well with my current skill set which includes creative writing. Despite my interest in this profession the main flaw in this industry would be the fact that there isn’t much stability in the job market according to this statistic which suggests that “approximately 48 percent of these 10,000 writers are working, and 52 percent are not. This figure lines up with reports I've read that about half of the WGA members are employed and half are unemployed.” Economically, your income varies on the type of film, play, and/or comic book you write for. Film Directors are in charge of making sure that every component of a movie runs smoothly. Generally, these directors work on a movie from its conception stage to its delivery stage. They have a say in how the scenes unfold, what props are going to be used, how the characters should look, and who should play specific parts. Directors also work with individuals in charge of lighting, scenery, writing, and so forth, to make sure that all of the elements come together. The director is in charge of the three main phases, which are pre-production, production and post-production. Generally, he or she does not actually do the work for post-production, but is in charge of overseeing it. It’s estimated that there has been an upward trend for this job with a 12 percent increase as of recently. This job requires immense amounts of expertise in artist visual concepts and story writing. For CIL this semester I’m creating a project that will help me explore a career in Forensic psychology. In this career path these psychologists are often clinical psychologists that specialize specifically in forensic concentration. Many of these environments that forensic psychologists typically work in include courts, prisons, mental hospitals, private facilities, and government agencies. Often times, they may evaluate the mental competency for criminals during trials, diagnose mental conditions and disorders, and study crimes to try and establish the profile of a criminal. They also may make recommendations for sentence lengths after a person is found guilty. Forensic psychologists often interview patients, evaluating information about their background, childhood, motivations, and actions. They may diagnose any applicable mental health issues. Forensic psychologists do a lot of writing as well. The need for forensic psychologists is expected to keep growing in the years to come. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment levels for forensic psychologists will grow at a rate of up to 19% per year up until the year 2018. POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION When thinking about choosing a college, it is important to me that the school offers me internships in my field of study. Realistically speaking I would love for the university to be located in the state of California. Out-of-state options will not be the most viable option based on my financial situation at the moment. Preferably I would like my college to be located in a more urban environment which I’ve been used to practically my whole life. As for extracurricular activities, I have no particular interest in unless they involve my career path. I took a quiz to find out the college that matched my requirements, and the colleges that matched my requests were U.C San Diego, Cal State Long Beach, and UC Irvine. U.C San Diego had a 35.7% acceptance rate with the average ACT score of 27-33 and SAT scores for reading and writing within the range of 560-680 and the math score of 610-770. The California State University of Long Beach have the typical ACT scores of 20-26 along with SAT scores for reading and writing: 460-570 and math: 470-590. As of Recently Cal State Long Beach has an acceptance rate of 31.9%. U.C Irvine accepts 41% of alumni who apply. They require an average ACT score between 24-30 and an average math score of 655-730 and an intermediate score for reading and writing between 631-680. After much thought and consideration, U.C Irvine has become the “dream college” of my choice due to the wide variety of impressive majors in their social ecology program. REFLECTION In order for me to become an excellent candidate when applying for my “dream college” I will Consistently check on my grades and correct assignments and redo tests (if necessary) during my time at Unity in order to qualify for the rigorous academic standards required by U.C Irvine. I must also look into the various internships, undergraduate programs, and necessary documents needed for me to apply to my dream school. I must also have a counselor show me how to apply for colleges when the time comes for me to look at colleges. Through this planning and research on my project I felt a bit intimidated by the great amounts of programs available and whether or not I chose the right university. On the other hand mostly excited about hopefully one day being on the field and learning from other experienced people in my career. By working on my CIL project I may gain a better understanding of the type of classes I would have to take at U.C Irvine and just to gain a better understanding of CIL career in general. After establishing a stable career in Forensic psychology I would love to know how to invest my money into other forms of income. Other then different forms of income I have no plans on changing my career path at the moment unless I decide to change “my dream school” In order to match my preference. |
